Black Beards Revenge, 2009

Pigment Print
14" x 18"
Edition of 50

I have always been interested in our local Maryland history and wanted to create an illustration reflecting on the infamous pirate Black Beard(also known as Edward Teach). Although it may only be legend, many locals here on the Eastern Shore believe that Black Beard spent much of his time traveling up and down the Chesapeake Bay. Possibly burying his beloved treasures along many of the deep and windy rivers that feed into the bay? I currently live in Queen Anne's county, which was named after Queen Anne I (1665-1714) who ruled Great Britain and Ireland from 1702 until 1714. It is also well known that Black Beard named his ship Queen Anne's Revenge. This connection seems to make his existence in our area even more possible. You can find information about Black Beard in many cities throughout Maryland and if you drive around long enough, you may also see roads named after him as well. I created this piece to capture the spirit of the notorious pirate Black Beard. There may possibly be a story to tell here, but I will leave it for your own interpretation. Arrr!
