Inspired by the collector tins from the 1920's and 30's, I have created my own version of the historical one gallon oyster can. It symbolizes the early harvesting, processing and selling methods from our Maryland history. The watermen of the late 1800s and early 1900s once harvested an astonishing 15 to 20 million bushels of oysters per year. The numbers are unfortunatly less than half a percent of that today, but the early oyster boom has certainly left its mark and helped to build the many communities and lifestyles we have around the Chesapeake Bay.

This can is the first of many to come. I anticipate the addition of several more collector tins in 2012 and will continue the series going forward. Each new can will focus on another area of Maryland and feature the historical traditions or contributions of that community.
